COMPLETED PROJECTS: SOCIAL INFRASTRUCTURE
EDUCATION
In the past decade, Hayastan All-Armenian Fund and its affiliates
have constructed and launched 36 schools and education institutions
in the earthquake zone, Karabakh, Syunik, Vayots Dzor, Aragatsotn,
Yervan, and Vanadzor.
▪ Vanadzor School
Armenia Fund USA completed renovation of the Vanadzor School
in Armenia’s Lori Marz province in 2002, under budget and in 11
months time. The original establishment, built in 1931, was Armenia’s
most renowned school and was completely destroyed in the 1988
earthquake. Students studied out of adjoining tin “canisters”
for over a decade. Following its policy of “going beyond bricks
and mortar,” Armenia Fund USA rebuilt the school’s curriculum,
which emphasizes advanced learning, teaching and management practices.
Armenia Fund has helped the Vanadzor School institutionalize a
parent-teacher organization and teacher training programs.
▪ Spyurk Educational Center
The Spyurk Center, a forum for inter-cultural exchange among
Armenians, was completed in the fall of 2003 by Armenia Fund USA.
The Center will serve as a training ground for Diasporan Armenian
teachers to learn the latest developments in Armenian pedagogy.
Simultaneously, the center will provide classes for local teachers
on Diasporan and Western Armenian topics and language. The Spyurk
Center also includes a computer center and library, and will organize
exhibitions, events, and academic competitions.
HEALTHCARE AND CHILD SUPPORT
In the last 10 years, Hayastan All-Armenian Fund and its affiliates
have implemented a variety of projects in 14 health institutions
in Karabakh, Lori, Armavir Marzes, and Yerevan.
▪ Stepanakert Polyclinic (partially completed)
The Stepanakert Polyclinic and Diagnostic Center was destroyed
during the war with Azerbaijan. When completed, the new facility
will be the first and only full medical center in Nagorno-Karabakh.
The Polyclinic will provide both in-care and out-care facilities
and will include a laboratory diagnostic capable of handling advanced
medical testing. The Fund will also provide state-of-the-art medical
equipment and supplies, as well as provide ongoing training for
medical and administrative personnel. The corner stone for the
facility was laid in August of 2002.
▪ Orphan Fund (ongoing)
The Karabakh Orphans’ Endowment Fund was established in 1999
to provide aid and assistance to children of soldiers who lost
their lives or were disabled as a result of the Karabakh conflict.
Armenia Fund USA and affiliates are providing assistance to a
total of 8,000 children. Each family receives a monthly payment
of 2000 drams or approximately $5. While this is a small amount
by Western standards, it helps provide for the basic needs of
the Karabakh orphans. Armenia Fund has arranged for monthly payments
to be distributed to the orphans through the Armenian Central
Bank.
All projects stemming from Hayastan All Armenian Fund and
Armenia Fund USA, help to employ and train people
in Karabakh and Armenia. The Funds’ standards and values also
promote a sense of accountability and responsibility throughout.
